» What do I need to do before I leave for UNL?

  • Contact International Affairs (I.A.) regarding the status of your I-20 and your flight information. I.A./UNL Admissions is designated to pick up all new international students from the airport. Email address of I.A.: iaffairs@unl.edu
  • Contact us (NUMSA) regarding your arrival. (Provide flight details, will I.A./UNL Admissions pick you up, will you need accomodation).
  • Make sure you have all the vital documents with you.
(I-20, valid U.S. visa, financial letter, bank draft, and flight ticket).

» What do I need to bring?

  • I-20 letter from the US Embassy.
Do not open it if it is sealed!
  • Financial Documents (Original and copies)
  • Valid visa (F1) from U.S. Embassy or consulate on your passport
  • Cash or travellers' checks amounting to U.S $200 (recommended)
  • Bank draft for tuition/housing fees
  • Clothing (recommended):
    • Summer/Fall: Normal everyday wear Malaysian clothes are fine. However, bring along a couple of sweaters, jeans, sandals, shoes and track suits in case the weather changes.
    • Winter/Spring: Winter coat/sweaters, gloves, ear muff, woolen head shield, scarf, winter boots, lip balm, long johns, socks. It is not necessary to purchase all your winter clothes in Malaysia as there is a wider choice and range here. However, you should always bring at least the bare minimum.
    • Traditional costumes: It is advisable for you to bring at least one traditional costume here, as we have occasions that showcase our culture.
    • Formalwear: Men and women should always bring presentable clothing here. If you have a suit, bring it along! (It is always a good investment to get a suit, as it will last you through your university days). For men, long sleeve shirts, dress shoes (e.g. leather), ties and slacks. For women: presentable blouse and skirt/long pants, complemented with ladies dress shoes. Business suits are optional.
  • Food: Most Asian spices and ingredients can be obtained at local oriental stalls here. It is not a necessity to bring fill your luggage with Maggie Mi or Bak Kut Teh. Rice cookers, rice and noodles are in available here.
  • Computers and Electrical/Electronic Appliances: Computer labs here are conveniently located across the campus. You may use them regardless if you live on campus, or off campus. If you are interested in getting a personal computer, you may purchase them from the local computer stores. Consult any senior students and they may be able to offer some help regarding this.

North America uses the Type A (American 2-pin) and Type B (American 3-pin) AC power plugs. It may be difficult to find a power plug adaptor here, so please buy an adaptor before leaving Malaysia. Your equipment must be able to use 120 V @ 60 Hz.
  • Sports Equipment: Sports equipment are more inexpensive in Malaysia. If you do not have the luggage space, do not worry, as we have them here too, but at slightly higher prices and less choices.
  • Stationary, Photography Film and Photos: Stationary is less expensive in Malaysia but will prove a heavy luggage if you bring too much. You will have to purchase specific calculators related to your major. However, if you own an ordinary/scientific calculator, bring them. If you have a film camera, bring them along with plenty of film! Film is less expensive in Malaysia. Brings along a couple of colored passport sized photographs.
  • Educational Certificates: It is not necessary for you to bring your PMR, SPM/STMP certificates, however bringing a copy might prove useful just in case. If you have piano/musical instruments or martial arts training (i.e. Karate) certificates, bring them along and you might be able to transfer them as extra credit hours! It is not necessary for you to bring your Malaysian driver's license but it is always advisable to bring some form of identification in case you lose your passport.
  • Miscellaneous: Bring along photos of your loved ones! When you're lonely/homesick, you'll remember the good times you had with them! Bring along souvenirs of Malaysia/your home town so that you may show it to your friends of different cultures.
